ABOUT US

The Swiss Society for Acoustic Ecology (SSAE) aims to support artistic, scientific, and societal activities in the field of acoustic ecology in Switzerland. The focus is on the national and international exchange between researchers, artists, students, and other societal stakeholders in the sense of a fundamental engagement with the soundscapes in the Alpine region and worldwide.

Founded in 2023, the SSAE is an affiliated organization with the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE). The WFAE is an international association of affiliated organizations and individuals who share a common concern for the state of the world’s soundscapes. Its members represent a multi-disciplinary spectrum of individuals engaged in the study of the social, cultural, and ecological aspects of the sonic environment across the world.

ACOUSTIC ECOLOGY

Acoustic ecology is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the scientific, aesthetic and artistic exploration of the sonic environment. Acoustic observation deepens an understanding of place, presence, belonging and sustainability by exploring, documenting, reflecting on and critically discussing environmental sounds or noises. Acoustic ecology also investigates connections that go beyond the human by focussing on ecological relationships between bio-, geo-, and anthropophonic sound sources within soundscapes.
